the meadowloft

The owners of the ‘Meadowloft’ wanted to create a cabin that embodied their core beliefs in economy, sustainable building principles and resourceful use of materials while reflecting a contemporary and artful approach to living within nature. The process was collaborative with owners, builder (and Baker) Ken Palfrey and artist Lynn Price, assisting in the resolution of design details and finishes. The 1000 sq ft plan achieves a rational and intelligent layout with ample storage, two private sleeping spaces, separate w/c and bathing rooms, and generous gathering spaces opening to the exterior covered decks. A back courtyard ensures abundant views of nature from all spaces and privacy from neighbours, while passive solar considerations maximize winter gain. Rainwater collection and solar power energy are ready for hook up. Recently Ken and Lynn built an exterior ‘wood fired masonry oven’ in the courtyard and are baking authentic Artisan breads and pastries for local islanders and visitors.
