lightburn retreat

One of the earliest projects of ‘websterdesign’, this “off-grid” solar powered vacation retreat is set on 5 acres of extraordinary island waterfront. The design deliberately represents an expression of both the historic ‘Adirondack’ camps of Eastern USA, combined with a traditional northern cabin sensibility. Stretching across the view, the concept provides a central gathering place for family and guests, connected by paths and decks to a separate bath house and sleeping cabins. The main cabin entrance, clad in stone from the site, was centered on massive existing glacially deposited boulders used as a reference point. Using many reclaimed historic windows and doors, the interiors were crafted in local wood, with some varieties milled from the property. From wall paneling to cabinetry and built-in furniture, the intent was to create a timeless intimate gathering environment expressive of place, while honouring the native wilderness setting.
