cliff house

Perched on a dramatic 150 ft sand cliff overlooking the ‘Strait of Georgia’ this off-grid house was conceived as an ‘open floating pavilion’ in the trees. The owners initially viewed the site during a gale force winter storm and were so moved that they bought the property immediately. As the land slopes up to the cliff edge, the house was essentially lifted to meet the views, built on a framework of glulam posts and beams. With extreme prevailing winds, the sheltering roof slopes down towards the winds and lifts up to the north providing softer abundant daylighting. Although passive solar and natural lighting were essential, solar panels and a back-up diesel generator also power energy needs. The house is anchored by a large central two sided ‘wood fired radiant heater’ which provides heat and ambiance. Energy efficient Gaulhofer Tilt and Turn windows and sliding doors were used throughout. All wood was sourced locally. A carved cedar panel beside the entrance tells the Tsimpshian legend of ‘Raven Bringing the Light.’ (see slide show images of carving process)
