The Shore House was a collaborative design achieved with strong aesthetic direction given by the owners and builder. The house sits on a dramatic sloped site which wraps around its own protected bay overlooking the ‘Strait of Georgia.’ The clients desire was to create a meaningful family ‘legacy’ retreat with a focus on permanence and craft while reflecting their deep respect for First Nations history, art and architecture. Reminiscent of the ‘long-house’ pavilions of the Coast Salish, light pours across interior ‘cedar’ wall panels casting reflections and patterns throughout the day. The intent was to openly express the architectural structural elements of the form and in particular, the entrance, through use of a large sheltering roof, exposed beams and detailed rafters. The slope of the site is reflected in the roof, which protects from prevailing winter storms. It’s height allows for passive solar gain to be captured in winter months.
